Invisalign Q & A

What is Invisalign?

Invisalign is an orthodontic treatment system that can give you a straight smile no matter the current position of your teeth. Having well-aligned, straight teeth makes for a smile that looks stunning and is easy to keep clean.

Invisalign accomplishes the same goals as braces, but it doesn’t use metal wires or brackets. The clear aligners, custom-designed to fit your teeth, gradually merge your teeth into more ideal positions over time by placing pressure on them.

Each aligner gets your teeth a little closer to the final result, and the aligners are clear, comfortable, and discreet.

How do I use my Invisalign aligners?

Using your Invisalign aligners properly helps you stay on track and complete treatment in a reasonable time frame, usually 12-18 months. Dr. Mug tells you how long to wear each set of aligners before switching to the next. It might be one or two weeks per set.

You should be sure to wear your aligners for 20-22 hours of the day and remove them only to eat and drink liquids other than water. You should not take them out to sleep, but you need to clean them and brush your teeth after eating.

Only use either toothpaste or specialized cleaner with lukewarm water on your aligners since hot water can warp the plastic.

What does Invisalign treat?

Invisalign can treat tooth misalignment in teens and adults who can consistently remember to wear their aligners and care for them well. There several different types of misalignment that commonly occur with adult teeth, including:

  • Underbite
  • Overbite
  • Gap teeth
  • Crossbite
  • Open bite
  • Tooth crowding
  • Generally crooked teeth

When you finish with Invisalign, Dr. Mug may give you a retainer to wear that keeps your teeth from merging back into their old positions.

What goes into Invisalign planning?

At MUG, Dr. Mug plans your Invisalign treatment using state-of-the-art technology like digital X-rays and 3D scans that help him predict your results long before you see them firsthand.

He also tells you approximately how long your treatment might take and how often you need to visit as you go through treatment.

If you have any dental issues like cavities or gum disease, you need to address them before starting Invisalign. Dr. Mug can tell you which procedures are necessary and make sure you’re healthy enough for an efficient Invisalign process before you start.
